What Is the Best Beeswax Bag to Use? And Why Are They So Good?
If you’ve ever bought a beautiful loaf of sourdough only to find it dry, hard or past its best a couple of days later, how you’re storing it could be part of the problem.
Plastic can trap moisture. Leaving bread uncovered allows it to dry out. And sometimes a traditional bread bin simply isn’t practical.
That’s where beeswax bags come in.
But what actually is a beeswax bag, why do they work so well, and which one should you choose?
What is a beeswax bag?
A beeswax bag is a reusable fabric food-storage bag treated with a beeswax-based coating.
At Lou-bees, our bags are handmade in the UK and designed to provide a simple, reusable alternative to disposable plastic food bags.
The waxed fabric creates a protective layer around your food while remaining flexible enough to fold around the contents.
For bread in particular, that balance is important.

Why are beeswax bags so good for bread?
Fresh bread needs a little breathing room.
Seal it in the wrong environment and moisture can become trapped. Leave it exposed and it can quickly become dry and hard.
A beeswax bread bag provides a protective, naturally breathable way to store your loaf while helping prevent it from drying out too quickly.
And unlike a disposable bread bag, you don’t throw it away after you’ve finished the loaf.
Simply empty out the crumbs, wipe the bag with cool water when required, allow it to air dry and use it again.
So, what is the best beeswax bag?
There isn’t one perfect size for everyone — the best beeswax bag depends on what you’re storing.
For a large sourdough or bakery loaf
Choose a Large 18 x 14 inch Beeswax Bag.
This is the size I’d recommend if you regularly buy or bake full sourdough loaves, bloomers or larger artisan breads.
There’s plenty of room for the loaf and enough fabric at the top to fold the bag over.

For smaller loaves and everyday bread
Our Medium 14 x 11 inch Beeswax Bag is a really useful everyday size.
It’s ideal for smaller sourdoughs, half loaves, rolls and other baked goods without having the excess fabric of a larger bread bag.

For snacks, sandwiches and smaller foods
Beeswax bags aren’t only for bread.
Smaller bags can be used for sandwiches, fruit, cheese, snacks and other everyday foods, making them a useful replacement for disposable sandwich bags around the kitchen.

Should a beeswax bag be stiff or flexible?
This is something I’ve spent a lot of time working on at Lou-bees.
For me, a good beeswax bag shouldn’t feel like a rigid container.
It needs to be soft enough to fold, flexible enough to mould around your food and tacky enough for the top to fold over and hold its shape.
That’s why the coating matters just as much as the fabric.
I started Lou-bees after buying my first beeswax wrap and thinking, I could make this better.
Since then there have been years of experimenting, testing and tweaking behind the products I make today.
Every Lou-bees beeswax bag is still made in small batches, with practicality at the heart of it.
Beeswax bag vs plastic bread bag
One of the biggest differences is simply that a beeswax bag is designed to be used again and again.
Instead of reaching for another disposable bag every time you buy or bake bread, you have one beautiful bag that becomes part of your kitchen.
And I think that’s what sustainable living should really be about.
It doesn’t have to mean filling your home with things that look eco-friendly.
Sometimes it’s simply going back to something more traditional: buy something useful, look after it and use it repeatedly.
And they can actually look beautiful…
Food storage doesn’t have to be hidden in a cupboard.
This is one of the reasons I love making beeswax bags in beautiful cottons, checks, stripes and heritage-inspired prints.
From understated Navy Stripe and Olive Riviera to William Morris designs, they’re intended to look just as lovely sitting on the kitchen worktop as they are practical to use.

How do you look after a beeswax bag?
It’s surprisingly easy.
Wipe or gently wash your bag using cool water and mild soap, then leave it to air dry.
The important thing is to avoid heat — beeswax doesn’t particularly enjoy hot water, dishwashers, tumble dryers or radiators!
With the right care, your bag can be reused again and again.
Which Lou-bees Beeswax Bag should I choose?
If you’re buying your first one, start with what you normally buy or bake.
Large 18 x 14” — full sourdoughs, bakery loaves and larger breads
Medium 14 x 11” — smaller loaves, half loaves and everyday bakery items
Small 12 x 9” — sandwiches, snacks and smaller foods
If you’re mainly buying one for bread and aren’t sure between two sizes, I’d personally go larger. It gives you more flexibility for those unexpectedly enormous bakery loaves!
Beautiful. Reusable. Made for everyday living.
For me, the best sustainable products are the ones you don’t have to think about using.
They simply become part of your everyday routine.
That’s exactly what I wanted THE Beeswax Bag to be: a beautiful, practical way to store food, reduce disposable plastic and keep something useful in your kitchen for years rather than minutes.
